The short version
Granola's labeling challenge is that it's heavy. Breakfast cereals are labeled by a weight-based reference amount, and a cup of clustery, oil-and-honey granola can weigh two to three times what a cup of flakes does. If you eyeball the serving as 'one cup' you can understate calories badly — the panel has to be built from grams.
Serving size — the part people get wrong
Reference amount: Set by density: 30 g, 40 g, 55 g or 60 g depending on cereal type. Ready-to-eat cereal uses a weight-based reference amount that scales with density: ~30 g for light flakes, 40 g for typical cereals, and 55 g for dense or clustered granola (heavier still for very dense mixes). Then you convert that gram weight to the household measure your customer uses (e.g. "2/3 cup (55 g)"). Weigh a real cup of your granola — don't assume.
Allergens you have to declare
Oats themselves aren't a Big-9 allergen, but granola gathers allergens fast: almonds, walnuts, pecans and cashews (tree nuts), peanuts, and wheat via barley malt, added wheat germ or shared-line oats. If you market gluten-free, you need certified gluten-free oats and to mean it. Declare each nut by specific name — a granola with three nuts needs all three listed.

Claims you can (and can’t) make
Every nutrient-content claim on the package has a legal threshold the panel must back up. For granola, the ones that come up most:
- Good source / Excellent source of fiber — fiber ≥ 2.8 g (good) or ≥ 5.6 g (excellent) per serving.
- Whole grain — not an FDA nutrient claim, but the ingredient must genuinely be whole-grain oats/grains.
- No added sugars — hard for granola — honey, maple and cane sugar are all added sugars; you'd need to sweeten only with fruit.
- Good source of protein — protein ≥ 5 g per serving (nut-heavy granolas can hit this).

Density is the story: this 55 g serving is a modest 2/3 cup because the granola is dense. A lighter flake at the same 55 g would fill more than a cup.
Where granola makers slip up
The 'per cup' trap
The most common granola-label error is declaring a full cup as the serving because that's how people scoop it. If your dense granola weighs 90 g per cup, a 'one cup' serving posts ~400+ calories — often higher than intended — while the correct weight-based serving (say 55 g) keeps the panel honest and comparable to competitors. Set the serving by grams first, then describe it in cups.
Added sugars from 'natural' sweeteners still count
Honey, maple syrup, agave, coconut sugar and cane sugar are all Added Sugars on the panel — 'naturally sweetened' granola is not low in added sugar unless the sugar comes only from whole fruit. This is the number health-conscious granola buyers actually read.
