Why your Canva nutrition label isn't FDA compliant (and what to do instead)
If you're searching how to make a nutrition label on Canva, here's the short answer: you can draw a box that looks like a Nutrition Facts panel, but it almost certainly won't be compliant. Not because Canva is bad software, but because a Nutrition Facts panel isn't a design. It's a specification. 21 CFR 101.9 dictates the type sizes, the leading, the rules, the indentation, the nutrient order, and the rounding of every value on it.

You're not doing anything dumb
You have a recipe, you have a package to print, and the panel looks like a formatting problem. It's a box with lines and numbers in it. Design tools are what you have and what you already know. A lab quoted you $1,609 to $1,724 per sample and a consultant quoted $240. Of course you opened Canva.
The reason it doesn't work has nothing to do with your design ability. You're being asked to hit a legal specification with a tool that has no concept of one, using numbers nobody has calculated yet.
The core problem: it's a specification, not a design
In a design tool, "close enough" is a legitimate outcome. The eye is the judge. If the kerning reads well and the box lines up, you're done.
The Nutrition Facts panel does not work that way. The regulation specifies the type style, the minimum type size for each element, the leading between lines, where hairline rules go, which lines are bold, which nutrients are indented, the exact order nutrients appear in, the names they must be called, and the increment each value rounds to. Every one of those is pass/fail, and none of them is visible to your eye.
A visually similar box is not a compliant panel. That's the whole problem in one sentence. And the failure stays invisible until an FDA inspector, a retail buyer, a co-packer, or Amazon's listing review catches it, by which point you've printed 5,000 pouches.

Canva
Search Canva for "nutrition label" and you'll find templates. They're decorative. They were designed to look like a Nutrition Facts panel for mockups and social posts, not built against 21 CFR 101.9. Type sizes are whatever looked balanced in the template, nutrient order is frequently wrong, Added Sugars is often missing entirely, and the bar weights are approximations.
More importantly, Canva has no rounding logic. You type "97 calories" and it renders "97 calories." The regulation expresses calories to the nearest 5-calorie increment up to and including 50, and the nearest 10 above 50. Your panel should say 100. Canva will never tell you that.
Microsoft Word
Word gives you a table and a font picker. It doesn't give you control over rule weights. Table borders come in preset weights that don't map to the spec, and you can't set leading independently of line spacing in a way that survives export to a printer's PDF. Type sizes drift when the table reflows. Word also does no nutrient math at all. Every number is something you typed.
Excel
Excel at least does arithmetic, which is why people reach for it. That's also the trap: it does your arithmetic, not FDA's. It will sum grams of fat across your ingredient list and give you 4.37 g. It has no idea that fat is expressed to the nearest 0.5 g increment below 5 grams, so the correct declaration is 4.5 g. It won't apply %DV rounding, and it won't know that under 0.5 g of fat must be declared as zero.
On layout, cell borders are not hairline rules and cell padding is not leading. Printing an Excel range to PDF at panel size is its own small nightmare.
Adobe Illustrator
This one deserves an honest answer: you can hit the visual specification in Illustrator. Real typographic control, real rule weights, real point sizes. Designers who've built panels before do exactly this.
What Illustrator doesn't give you is the numbers. You're hand-entering values computed somewhere else, with no rounding engine to catch a mistake and no audit trail showing where a value came from. Change one ingredient and you re-key the whole panel, then re-check every %DV. There's also no record of why the sodium value is what it is, which is what you'll need when a buyer or an inspector asks.
The part nobody tells you: the hard part isn't the box
This is why every "nutrition label template" you find leaves you stuck. Drawing the panel is maybe 20% of the work. The other 80% is producing correct numbers, and no design tool touches any of it:
Ingredient-level nutrient data. Every ingredient needs a nutrient profile, sourced consistently and matched to the form you actually used. Raw almonds and roasted salted almonds are different rows.
Yield and moisture adjustment. Your recipe weighs 2,400 g going in. After baking it weighs 2,050 g. Water left. The nutrients didn't. Divide by raw weight and every value on your panel is wrong. This is the most common calculation error in a hand-built panel.
Serving size from the RACC. You don't choose it. It's derived from the Reference Amount Customarily Consumed for your category in 21 CFR 101.12, then expressed in a household measure. Get it wrong and every number is wrong, plus you may owe a dual-column panel you didn't know about.
FDA rounding. Not standard rounding. Each nutrient has its own increment rules, listed below.
%DV math. Each value against its Daily Value, then rounded on its own separate schedule.
Added sugars determination. You have to separate sugars naturally present in an ingredient from sugars added during processing, including those contributed by juice concentrate and honey. That's a judgment call about your recipe, not a lookup.
A template hands you the 20%. You're still standing in front of the 80%.
What the specification actually requires
If you're going to hand-build anyway, here's what you're building to. All of this is from 21 CFR 101.9(c) and (d).
Typeface. The regulation requires "a single easy-to-read type style," in upper and lower case, and specifies that letters should never touch. It does not name a required font. FDA's own published format examples are set in Helvetica, which is why everyone assumes Helvetica is mandatory, but the legal requirement is legibility and consistency. Anyone telling you a specific font is required is overstating the rule.

Leading. 101.9(d)(1)(ii)(C) requires "at least one point leading" generally, "except that at least four points leading shall be utilized for the information required by paragraphs (d)(7) and (d)(8)." That means 4 points for the nutrient declaration and %DV listing under (d)(7), and 4 points for the vitamin and mineral listing under (d)(8). The Calories declaration lives at (d)(5) and is not covered by the 4-point requirement.
Rules and the box. The nutrition information must be set off in a box using hairlines, on a white or other neutral contrasting background whenever practical. A hairline rule centered between the lines of text separates "Nutrition Facts" from the servings-per-container statement, and separates each nutrient and its %DV from the ones above and below. The heavier bars that divide the major sections are specified in Appendix B to 21 CFR Part 101, "Graphic Enhancements Used by the FDA", which is part of the regulation, and they appear in the sample formats at 101.9(d)(12). Build to Appendix B. FDA's high-resolution label format examples are a useful practical reference, but the regulation is the authority, not the graphics file.
Bold and indentation. "Nutrition Facts," non-indented nutrient names, and percentage amounts are bold or extra bold. Subcomponents are indented under their parent: saturated fat and trans fat under total fat, dietary fiber and sugars under total carbohydrate.
Required nutrient order. Calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, total sugars, added sugars, protein, then the required vitamins and minerals. You use the nutrient names the regulation specifies, in that order. Not your order.

That table is the reason a spreadsheet doesn't get you there. Those aren't rounding conventions, they're six different rounding schedules that switch at thresholds. Note especially that %DV is not one rule: the 2/5/10 schedule everybody quotes applies only to vitamins and minerals. Round a sodium or saturated fat %DV that way and the panel is non-compliant.
The honest part
Hand-building a Nutrition Facts panel is legal. FDA doesn't require software, doesn't certify software, and doesn't approve labels at all. If your panel meets the specification and your values are accurate and defensible, it doesn't matter what you drew it in. A capable designer with the regulation and correct nutrient data can produce a compliant panel in Illustrator.
